Reportage

The Dutch travel agency Wesemann Travel runs under the motto journeys for and by the deaf. International deaf tourists participate in tours and workshops given by deaf locals in the countries of destination. This way, Wesemann Travel aims at confidence building and transnational sense of belonging on the part of both hosts and guests.

Wesemann Travel was founded in 2010 by Johan Wesemann, a strong advocate for emancipation of the deaf and former Chair of the European Disability Forum, and his son Jos, who now operates the company.

Despite national differences in sign languages, deaf communication is characterized by a high degree of understanding that exceeds that of spoken languages.

Deaf communities worldwide endeavor to have deafness seen as a culture rather than a handicap.
